Green Tip of the Month

Sustainable Investments

Looking to green your spa, but worried about the expenses?

Our upcoming Green Scene ("Mayan Marvel," August 2010) contains lots of information about cost-efficient ways to incorporate eco-friendly supplies into your spa.

Heres a taste to get you started:

Make investments that have a proven return.
John Vater, co-owner of Spa Adriana in Huntington, New York, says, "solar panels pay off, as long as you continue using them to save on energy costs."

Shop locally.
When Vater and his wife Adriana recently remodeled their spa, they wanted to enrich their Mayan theme by building a faade with limestone from the Yuctan Peninsula in Mexico. Instead, they found a local company that manufactures precut concrete. "That way our renovation doesn't have the environmental impact that would result from shipping and trucking materials all that distance," John says. "It saves a lot of money too."

What supplies, products and materials do you employ to increase your spa's sustainability? Send your ideas to Katie O'Reilly, associate editor, at koreilly@creativeage.com.

Accreditation and Education

Day Spa AssociationThe Day Spa Association (DSA) has revamped its accreditation program to recognize even more businesses demonstrating exceptional standards within the industry.

The DSA Accreditation Program is available only to those spas that meet or exceed best-practice principles as deemed by the DSA, according to Rosemary Weiner. “This classification showcases the spa’s commitment to excellence in the safe delivery of quality services, their business operations, staff performance and continuing education,” says the chairperson of the DSA board of directors.

Qualified candidates—full-service day spas, salons that offer spa services, resort and hotel spas, and medspas and health clubs—must already be DSA members in good standing. Applications, which can be obtained from the company’s website, will be reviewed by the organization’s advisory board.

For more information and an application, call 201.865.2065, email dayspaassn@aol.com or visit the association’s website.

The National Coalition of Estheticians, Manufacturers/Distributors and Associations (NCEA) has developed a new certification program in Canada. The organization—comprised of skincare companies, industry professionals and educators—was founded to promote continuing education and credentialing for the professional skincare industry. It works closely with state regulatory boards to set standards.

“We believe in raising the esthetician’s education to be successful in today’s competitive workplace,” says Susanne S. Warfield, executive director of the NCEA. “Bringing this program to Canada will strengthen the esthetician’s skill set and give her a global step up if she chooses to work in the United States.”

The program, which takes six to eight weeks to complete, will be offered at computer-based testing centers throughout North America.

For information on education or to inquire about joining the NCEA, visit the website.

OPI Model

American designer Marc Jacobs hand-picked OPI Products to gussy up his models’ nails during New York Fashion Week for spring 2010. Jacobs was pleased with his partnership with the polish leader during high-fashion’s biggest showcase last September. OPI gave the designer’s models a “perfectly polished nude” nail. Soft colors, including Malaysian Mist (a sunny, light pink), Samoan Sand (warm beige-pink) and Dulce de Leche (creamy nude), were used for the clean, elegant look. The OPI palette for spring is yet to OPI Nail Lacquerbe determined.

Industry Milestones

Lydia SarfatiGrowing up in Communist Poland, Repêchage founder Lydia Sarfati says her happiest moments were when her mother transformed the kitchen into a spa. Friends and family would gather for manicures, pedicures and facials. Those fond memories turned into the foundation of her life’s work.

Sarfati opened her first day spa in New York City in 1977. As she worked to perfect her own skincare procedures, she invented the Four Layer Facial, a system meant to produce a quality service every time. Its popularity led to the launch of Repêchage in 1980.

Today, Sarfati is CEO of the brand that pioneered seaweed-based skin care. Her methods and products are used in more than 150 spas worldwide.

In celebration of the company’s upcoming 30th anniversary, it’s rereleasing The Repêchage Four Layer Facial in a single box.

The idea that launched Creative Nail Design, (CND) was sparked at the dentist’s office 30 years ago. At the time, Stuart Nordstrom, DDS, decided to investigate a new nail enhancement product after a patient remarked that the material used to prepare temporary caps for teeth smelled like porcelain nails. The resulting invention, SolarNail Liquid, was an effective formula to improve nail strength and flexibility—and the first to deliver natural, non-yellowing nail color, according to the manufacturer.

Since then, the company—which is still run by the Nordstrom family—has grown to include lacquer and gel polishes, as well as hand and foot products, including the popular SpaManicure and SpaPedicure lines of lotions, salts, scrubs and masks.
CND is also a leader in continuing education in the beauty industry. Through seminars and workshops, it certifies thousands of nail technicians around the world.
