Planting the Seeds

As part of their greening efforts, some spa owners are growing organic ingredients in their business's own backyard. Grown in a small veggie garden or tiny pots of herbs, these ingredients ensure freshness and add home-grown flavor to a spa's treatments, skin care and cuisine. If you're thinking of growing your own spa ingredients, you don't have to go it alone. Whether you're known for your green thumb or struggle to keep cacti alive, these resources can help your garden grow:

  • Composting101.com
By creating your own compost, you can give your garden the nutrition it needs without spending a penny on expensive fertilizers.
  • Gardeners.com
Here you'll find a variety of how-to articles on gardening and the supplies you'll need, including prefab raised garden beds and insect colonies to control pests.
  • Greenspanetwork.org
Visit this site's 'professionals' page to read Lisa Roger Sykes' overview on how to build a raised garden bed.
  • Organicgardeningguru.net

NEWS ALERT

It’s no joke: For the seventh year, business services giant Cintas Corp (cintas.com). will honor non-residential facilities whose restrooms are worthy of royalty. The company is accepting nominations now from any business that wants to earn recognition for its overall exceptional restroom, from its sparkling fixtures to its breathtaking views. Cintas created the award to honor businesses that combine good hygiene with functionality and exceptional style in their public restrooms. Previous winners have included such major institutions as the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, and modest local businesses such as Wendell’s Restaurant in Westerville, OH.

Spas, known for their unique and luxurious restrooms, stand a good chance to win first prize: the “America’s Best Restroom” plaque of recognition from Cintas. The top five vote-getters receive permanent residence on the contest website’s “America’s Best Restroom Hall of Fame.”

To enter, go to bestrestroom.com from now through April 7, 2008. In May 10 finalists will be announced and the Internet public will begin to cast their votes. The contest has reportedly attracted tens of thousands of votes since it began in 2002.

Pedicure equipment and nailcare accessories company Pedicure Bowls.com has teamed with European distributor Renaissance Products, Ltd. to expand the product line in United Kingdom and Ireland. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from the European Market for our bowls,” says founder and CEO Noel Asmar. “We are delighted to have a relationship in place with Renaissance Products Ltd. to provide our European clientele with the impeccable service for

which our brands are known worldwide.” Asmar is also the founder of the companies Spa Collection Design Studios and Spa Uniforms, which also sells a luxury line of spa blankets and towels.

Wilma Schumann Skin Care (skin-care-cosmetic.com)has moved its headquarters into a larger facility, effective Feb. 1. The new site has a clinic and training institute on premises. Chellá Professional Skin Care (chella.com) was a featured success story in the business section of the Ventura County Star, a well-known community newspaper in Southern California. The article profiled Chellá founder Chris Kolodziejski (who is also the former starting tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers) about the peptide-based skincare line. Kolodziejski told the Star that he decided to start the company after learning about the potential results achieved by using peptides to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. “When I got into the business, I had to know that there were active ingredients that really worked,” he told the paper. The company’s revenue rose 65% in 2007, and Kolodziejski expects the company to become profitable by the second quarter of 2008.
