Green Tip of the Month

Save the Landfills

In this month's Green Scene ("A Higher Purpose"), we talk about a multitude of ways in which you can recycle and reuse all of those product containers you go through any given day. One suggestion came from SpaRitual, which for a time was packaging its new Handprint Hydrating Hand Salve in salvaged yarn containers—which are just cylinders of colorful, thick card stock with plastic caps on both ends.

Accompanying new tubes of Handprint were instructions on how to transform the yarn container and give it yet another life—as a bud vase. All you had to do was take the product out of the yarn container and remove the plastic from both ends. Then, fill a plastic water bottle—yet another item that's easily recycled—with water and insert it into the tube. Add fresh flowers, and voilá!

What products do you use—both in the spa and at home—that could find a second life in ways similar to this? Send us your ideas at arost@creativeage.com!

Star Treatment: Fountain of Youth

Combating the signs of aging is an ongoing battle for your clients. Fatigue, stress, pollutants and diet create fine lines, hyperpigmentation and dull skin.

The Youth Glow Facial (50 or 75 min./$95 or $110) at LaBarre Skin Nutrition (www.labarrenutrition.com) in Beverly Hills, California, takes on Mother Nature with a complex regimen of firming, hydrating and detoxifying treatments.

After a thorough skin analysis, owner/esthetician Lisa LaBarre gently cleanses skin in preparation for an enzyme peel, mild extractions and a hydrating mask that gets an assist from an electrocurrent machine. Clients hold one end of the charged wand, while the other is massaged across the face to drive vitamins and minerals into the pores.

The final step is a lymphatic-drainage facial massage that has been known to put clients to sleep. They walk away feeling rested, while their face is plump and perky.

The Protocol:

1. Gently cleanse the face and neck.

2. Apply a fruit enzyme peel and allow it to absorb for 5-to-10 minutes.

3. Refine the skin with toner and perform extractions, if necessary.

4. Brush the skin with an all-natural, customized mixture of vitamins, minerals, hyaluronic acid, aloe and other organic ingredients. Use an electrocurrent machine to gently push the antiaging nutrients deep into the skin.

5. Perform a detoxifying acupressure face, neck and shoulder massage using lymphatic drainage techniques.

6. Give clients a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory gel mask with Chinese herbs to maximize the skin's natural glow.

7. Finish with a three-layer application of peptide and hyaluronic acid serums and an ultra-nourishing moisturizer.
