Looking to green your spa, but worried about the expenses?

Make investments that have a proven return.
John Vater, co-owner of Spa Adriana in Huntington, New York, says, "solar panels pay off, as long as you continue using them to save on energy costs."

Shop locally.
When Vater and his wife Adriana recently remodeled their spa, they wanted to enrich their Mayan theme by building a faade with limestone from the Yuc‡tan Peninsula in Mexico. Instead, they found a local company that manufactures precut concrete. "That way our renovation doesn't have the environmental impact that would result from shipping and trucking materials all that distance," John says. "It saves a lot of money too."

Standard mileage deduction rates will increase from 48.5 cents to 50.5 cents per mile for business miles driven beginning January 1, 2008, the Internal Revenue Service announced. The standard mileage rate for service to charitable organizations will remain the same at 14 cents per mile. For more information about standard mileage rates, visit www.irs.gov.

The application process for the 2009 ISPA Board of Directors will begin in early 2008.

The Iatria Day Spa (iatria.com) chain in North Carolina has been recognized by Inc. magazine as one of America’s fastest-growing private companies, announced Iatria president Erika Mangrum. A list of companies previously known as “The Inc. 500” has been expanded to “The Inc. 5,000.” The companies are chosen for the list based on revenue growth.

The 19th Annual Contessa Awards honoring Canada’s top beauty professionals were presented on November 4 at a gala in Toronto. The four panels of industry expert judges had a daunting job, selecting 15 national and 6 region-specific prizewinners, plus a community service award winner, from hundreds of entries. However, by the evening of the gala, they’d chosen winning beauty professionals in the categories of hair, makeup, nails, salon interior design and community service.
