Green Tip of the Month

Sustainable Investments

Looking to green your spa, but worried about the expenses?

Our upcoming Green Scene ("Mayan Marvel," August 2010) contains lots of information about cost-efficient ways to incorporate eco-friendly supplies into your spa.

Heres a taste to get you started:

Make investments that have a proven return.
John Vater, co-owner of Spa Adriana in Huntington, New York, says, "solar panels pay off, as long as you continue using them to save on energy costs."

Shop locally.
When Vater and his wife Adriana recently remodeled their spa, they wanted to enrich their Mayan theme by building a faade with limestone from the Yuctan Peninsula in Mexico. Instead, they found a local company that manufactures precut concrete. "That way our renovation doesn't have the environmental impact that would result from shipping and trucking materials all that distance," John says. "It saves a lot of money too."

What supplies, products and materials do you employ to increase your spa's sustainability? Send your ideas to Katie O'Reilly, associate editor, at koreilly@creativeage.com.

Spa Moves

The Spa at Chatham Bars Inn (chathambarsinn.com) in Cape Cod, MA, opened at its namesake oceanfront resort on Labor Day weekend. Features in the 2,500-square-foot indoor spa area include wet and dry treatment rooms, Vichy shower room and a relaxation room that includes individual Bose sound systems for waiting clients. The outdoor area boasts private cabanas for massages and a 1,500-square-foot heated hydrotherapy pool. “Our goal is to provide the most cutting-edge spa services in the most luxurious setting,” says spa director Kim Wisenbarger. The historic Chatham Bars Inn opened its door in 1914 and is listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Cocoon Spa & Yoga Studio has become one of the newest additions on the San Francisco spa scene. The spa, which promises local residents a new kind of urban renewal, opened its doors in September. Owner/founder Sarah Redmond consulted with nationally certified yoga specialist Danielle Marie Giovanello to create unique blends of yoga disciplines. It’s expected that Giovanello’s famous mentors will visit the spa regularly to train and lead seminars. Skincare, massage, nail services and waxing are all on the menu, as is a variety of teas, coffees, waters and wines.

Canyon Ranch (canyonranch.com) has made a strategic and humane move. As of October 1, the company’s Tucson, AZ, and Lenox, MA, locations have switched to the exclusive use of cage-free eggs in its dining facilities. It’s estimated that the two properties use approximately 200,000 eggs per year. According to the Human Society of the United States (hsus.org), U.S. factory farms confine nearly 300 million hens in battery cages so small they can’t even spread their wings. Cage-free birds, on the other hand, can walk, spread their wings and lay their eggs in nests. “The Humane Society of the United States commends Canyon Ranch’s leadership in helping prevent one of the worst factory farm abuses,” says Paul Shapiro, senior director of The HSUS’ factory farming campaign. “We encourage other resorts and spas to follow its positive example.”

Indigo Eco/Spa (stevenswood.com) has opened its doors inside Stevenswood Spa Resort in Humboldt County, a ruggedly beautiful area well north of San Francisco on the Northern California coast. Offering four treatment suites, the 3,500-square-foot spa makes use of its neighboring coastline resources to provide stone massage, salt scrubs and other treatments using ocean plants and old growth redwood trees. Guests can also enjoy a workout at the spa’s ocean-view fitness center.
