Legislative Visit
During a recent National Conference of State Legislators in Seattle, the National Cosmetology Association (NCA) represented the professional salon industry to more than 5,000 legislators and their staffs. “Attending the conference gives us an important opportunity to meet with both legislators and staff from all 50 states,” says Mark Goodman, NCA director and chairman of the NCA Legislative Committee. “These are the state officials responsible for the laws and regulations that control how we work day to day in our salons. NCA invests tens of thousands of dollars annually to constantly monitor legislative and regulatory activity in every state that relates to our industry.”

More than 2,000 gift bags were distributed containing products donated by OPI Products, Avancé/ECRU, EOH Industries, Profound Beauty, PureOlogy, Redken and Sally Beauty.

Stand-Out Students
• This past September the Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors Association (ICMAD) announced its top three winners in the 2005 Young Designers’ Competition at an awards dinner in New York City. The goal of the competition is to encourage young, creative talent that will build the future of the cosmetics industry. Judging criteria for packaging included uniqueness, ability to be reproduced economically, and use and storage accessibility. The winners included Tyler Moore from the American Academy of Art for his “Motive High Gloss Hair Spray” design, Wei-Li Chen of The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising for her “O’live Shampoo” design, and Anna Zimnoch from the Fashion Institute of Technology for her “It’s All About Your Hair—Protein Hair Treatment” design.

• This year The Salon Association (TSA) has chosen 130 Beacon winners nationwide from nearly 500 entrants. The Beacon program is open to cosmetology students, new graduates and apprentices and entry into the contest involves the submission of a creative work of the entrant’s choice (painting, collage, video, etc.). The winning students receive free tuition to the annual TSA Symposium, valued at $1,500, where they’ll learn the ins and outs of the business side of hairdressing and have access to potential employers via a career center.
