Skin Care By Laurie, a skincare center in Torrance, CA, owned and operated by skin therapist Laurie Manley, received a Power of Touch award from the Dermalogica Foundation recently. The honor is given annually to Dermalogica accounts that participate in humanitarian causes. During the holiday season, Manley organized local merchants for A Day of Giving, a benefit for House of Hope, a nonprofit shelter for women recovering from substance abuse. As part of the Power of Touch award, Dermalogica makes a $2,500 donation to the recipient’s nonprofit organization of choice. Manley has selected House of Hope to receive her donation. |

Leedz Salon and Leedz Salon & Spa in Ames, IA, teamed up with Sexy Hair Concepts earlier this year to host Hair Jam, a styling event that benefited Cut It Out, a nonprofit program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund. Leedz stylists, along with Kevin Griffith, national platform artist for Sexy Hair, transformed more than 50 models for the benefit show held at Club Element in Ames. The show featured fashions provided by Melrose Apparel and makeup by TIGI, and attracted a crowd of over 300. |

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Jerry Tyler and Marlene Gadinis to California’s Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, which oversees licensing of salons and spas. Tyler is director of education for Carlton Hair International and Gadinis owns Ecotique Salon and Spa in San Diego. Both are on the Professional Beauty Federation of California (PBFC) board of directors and join the state board as industry members. The PBFC (www.beautyfederation.org) is an industry advocacy coalition representing every beauty industry sector in California. |

New consumer value-added areas include: Skin Solutions, interactive skincare recommendations; Spa Showcase, featuring profiles on premier spas; Search-A-Spa, a consumer spa locator; and a press room. In addition, spa professionals can access a password-protected zone for educational, marketing and other business-building support tools.

www.spafinder.com has introduced several upgrades. Visitors can now take advantage of the updated spa search tool and an expanded spa guide. In addition, the site now includes more lifestyle features, such as the spa cuisine section featuring sample recipes.

The new website includes a special “professionals only” section, a salon and spa finder and extensive product information. “Thermafuse.com is a fast, easy way for consumers to find salons and spas that carry Thermafuse products,” says Van Stanley, company founder and CEO. |
The Results Are In
In recent elections, the members of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) elected Anthony Fragomeni as their new president. Elections were held at the AACS annual convention in Miami Beach, FL. Fragomeni, owner and director of Northern Westchester School of Hairdressing in Peekskill, NY, recently served as the association’s vice president and has held the position of chair of the AACS’ Government Relations Committee. He’ll serve a one-year term with the option to run for a second. “My goal is to continue to build innovative programs, like the new Create Professional product line for cosmetology schools and the AACS Career Connection website,” says Fragomeni.
The AACS also welcomes Susanne S. Warfield, industry expert, president and CEO of PCI publishing, to its board of directors. Warfield serves as the executive director of the National Coalition of Estheticians, Manufacturers/Distributors & Associations. |
Major Merger
Chiropractic and massage product distributor Scrip has finalized a merger with Massage Warehouse and Day Spa Warehouse. The merger creates the largest single-source supplier of professional products to doctors of chiropractic, massage therapists and day spas.
