DSA Honors the Best
The competition was fierce, but this year’s Distinguished Day Spa Award went to Bellanina Day Spa & Gift Boutique (www.bellanina.com) in Ann Arbor, MI, and the 2006 Spa Person of the Year was Douglas Preston, CEO of Preston, Inc. in Santa Cruz, CA. The awards, given annually by The Day Spa Association (DSA) to recognize excellence, were presented in February at the Day Spa Expo (www.dayspaexpo.com) during the Hearts for a Cure awards and charity event benefiting the Melanoma Research Foundation (www.melanoma.org).

Opened in December 2002, Bellanina Day Spa has won several local honors and plays an active role in its community. “I wanted to create a space with balance and harmony so clients feel like they’ve had the most unique experience possible when they leave,” says owner Nina Howard.

The Spa Person of the Year is chosen annually from the pool of current and previous years’ Spa Persons of the Month, selected six times per year. Nominees have made a significant contribution to the day spa industry both locally and nationwide. Votes for Spa Person of the Year were collected online; Preston received 46% of the votes. The Distinguished Day Spa Award is open to all DSA-accredited day spas. The winner is selected by the DSA advisory board and judging is based on the spa menu; quality of service; continuing education opportunities available to the staff; commitment to creating a nurturing atmosphere for clients and personnel; and commitment to community, environment, humanity and the spa industry. Giving Back
Marquette University student Tiffany Haeflinger (pictured at right with Institute of Beauty & Wellness stylist Samantha Kempf) helped to organize a hair donation event for Locks of Love.
The Institute of Beauty & Wellness recently joined forces with students at Marquette University in a benefit for Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term hair loss, (often due to alopecia areata, a medical condition which has no known cause or cure). Organized by Marquette students Megan Schneeberg and Tiffany Haeflinger, 30 participants each donated more than 10 inches of their hair, and 12 students from the Institute provided them with new looks. “The event was a huge success as many students were able to donate their hair to a worthy organization and leave with a trendy hairstyle,” says Gaya Glassen, cosmetology team leader for the Institute. “It’s amazing to see two schools working together to make a difference.” For more information on Locks of Love visit www.locksoflove.org.

It also collaborated with a local radio station to organize the Susan G. Komen Golf Tournament. Continuing its commitment to the Foundation, Elite recently hosted the Passion International Stylebooks photography session with more than 20 salon participants; each full registration fee was donated to the Foundation.

The Deal’s Off
The pending merger between Alberto-Culver’s, Sally Beauty division and the Minneapolis-based Regis Corp. has been terminated, following Alberto-Culver’s announcement that its board of directors had withdrawn its recommendation to Alberto-Culver stockholders that they approve the transactions contemplated by the Merger Agreement. According to a statement issued by Alberto-Culver, board members cited “Regis’ two consecutive earnings shortfall announcements since the execution of the Merger Agreement, significant revisions to Regis’ financial forecasts, uncertainty about Regis’ fiscal 2007 outlook, and certain differences over operating and governance approaches,” as reasons to terminate the potential deal. Another factor that contributed to the termination was the fact that Alberto-Culver’s attempts to renegotiate previously announced terms of the merger failed. The merger, originally scheduled for completion in early July, would have created an operation with combined annual sales of $4.5 billion. As of press time neither company had issued additional statements.
