Winning Story
When attending barber school as a teenager in his home state of New Mexico, Jim Markham was just looking for a reliable job with a steady paycheck. That beginning led to success as a celebrity stylist and product developer, and now the founder and CEO of PureOlogy will be inducted into the Hall of Leaders at the North American Hairstyling Awards in Las Vegas in July. The Hall of Leaders honor is given each year to a beauty-business visionary who has made outstanding contributions to the hair and beauty industry. Markham shepherded PureOlogy from a small start-up in 2001 to the award-winning business it is today.
Nailing Safety
With 155,000 people in the United States working as nail professionals, there are understandably varying levels of education and knowledge of safety issues in the nailcare field. To help solve the problem, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released an updated version of its report “Protecting the Health of Nail Salon Workers.” The 21-page downloadable document has been completely revamped from its previous incarnation and covers topics such as best shop practices, what kind of gloves to wear and how to read Material Safety Data Sheets. The report also includes a table of nail product ingredients with their uses and overexposure symptoms. To download the report visit epa.gov/dfe/pubs/projects/salon/index.htm.

Racing for the Cure
Eleven Dermalogica employees went from the company’s signature gray to pink when they participated in this year’s Los Angeles County Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The Dermalogica runners/walkers also got spectator co-workers to pony up cash for the cause, which raises funds for breast cancer research. Says Jane Wurwand, Dermalogica founder and CEO, “We’re inspired to represent Dermalogica in the ongoing effort to raise breast cancer awareness and help women stay healthy.

female employees. This isn’t just a cause for women, because it touches entire families, couples, communities and relationships. We all must be part of the cure.”
Sonya’s Swag Solution
Instead of contributing to the vast quantities of gift bags handed out to celebs during the recent awards season, skincare expert Sonya Dakar decided to reverse the trend. Dakar had notable names, including Drew Barrymore, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, do the giving—by signing tubes of her popular 365 SPF 30 sunscreen for an auction to benefit CancerCare, which provides free professional support services to anyone affected by the disease. “I feel that I’ve been so fortunate to come to a country where there’s so much opportunity, where citizens have welcomed me and helped to make my success possible,” says Dakar. “To be able to use that success to give back to an organization that’s so worthwhile is very rewarding.” For more information visit sonyadakar.com.

Beauty is an extremely social business, and the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) is taking advantage of this by launching a new networking concept called Beauty Circles. Beauty Circles take place at receptions after trade shows and allow established PBA members and prospective members to meet and network. “We’re continually building new tools and forums to bring the industry together,” says Steve Sleeper, PBA executive director. “As our members highly value networking events, Beauty Circles builds a sense of community within the industry while offering a relaxed way to connect and learn from other PBA members.” Beauty Circles debuted this year at the International Salon and Spa Expo in Long Beach, CA, and has events scheduled as part of Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas in July. Giving Back
All Ribbon Spa Day
Despite a spring snowstorm that knocked out power and trees and dumped a foot of snow in Kennebunk, ME, and the surrounding area, the third annual All Ribbon Spa Day at The Spa at River’s Edge in Kennebunk “went off without a hitch,” says owner Lori Solari. Thanks to Solari and her team, 30 women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment were pampered with complimentary spa services. The purpose for the Spa Day hits very close to home: Solari’s sister-in-law, Nina, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 27. Solari researched the effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments on the female body and tailored her Spa Day services accordingly. Spa Day guests could receive a soothing facial, gentle hand and scalp massages, scalp treatments and makeup applications. Participants could also get their hair cut, styled or even shaved off.

PC Pals, sponsored by the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, provides pediatric patients with PCs and software so they can keep up with email, IM their friends and surf the ’Net—and stay on top of schoolwork—while they’re in the hospital. The patients also receive access to Starbright World (starbrightworld.org), an online community for seriously ill teens.
